Notes on Focus
Focus is not a skill. It’s a habit. And habits are built by removing friction.
The hardest part of deep work isn’t the work itself. It’s the transition. The moment between “I should start” and “I’m actually doing it.” That gap is where the resistance lives.
What Helps
- Single tab. One browser window. One tab. Nothing else.
- Phone in another room. Out of sight is not out of mind, but it’s close enough.
- Time blocks. “I will work on X from 9 to 11.” The constraint creates focus.
- No notifications. Turn them off. All of them. You’ll survive.
What Doesn’t Help
- Willpower. It’s finite. You exhaust it by noon.
- Productivity apps. Most of them are just another place to procrastinate.
- Waiting for the right mood. The mood doesn’t come. You find it by starting.
The Real Trick
The real trick is accepting that focus is uncomfortable. Your brain wants novelty. It wants to check email, scroll, switch. Resisting that is effort. It’s supposed to feel effortful.
The goal isn’t to make it easy. It’s to make it possible. Reduce the friction. Accept the discomfort. Start.
